A Hobbit conquers Hattingen
Billy Boyd, who triumphated as Hobbit Pippin in the Lotr trilogy, on the church square.
Billy Boyd, the Hobbit from Lotr has been filming on the church square for the movie "The Flying Scotsman"
Role A 162, Scene 140 B, Take one: The new worldrecord cylist Graeme Obree drives into a french village with his wife and his welcomed by the cheering masses.
The catch:This french village lies in the "ruhrpott" ( *thats a colloquial term for the area i come from, the ruhr-basin in western germany..) , it is the church square of the St. George church. And the cheering french are mostly people from Hattingen- 85 extras, playing for a salary of 70€ ( omg, i'd have done it for free, bastards..)
They have been on set since 6 am. They listen friendly instructions, listen to director Douglas MacKinnon shouting "Action". Now they have to concentrate, everything needs to fit - cheering in the arranged moment; but cheering properly: moving the arms properly, whistling, hooting and screaming.
So its finally Action:Because such a day on set is mostly one thing: waiting. - waiting until the scenery is right, waiting until the cameras are set, waiting until the last one has found his spot.
The weather plays along. Blue sky, beaming sunlight as George's bell clangs twelve times. " We panicked a little, cos the summer was so bad.In terms of the weather it was a close match." says co-producer Kai Künnemann of Zero West.
With this big motive we had to rely on good weather - and Hattingen gave us the sun.
Billy Boyd, playing a certain Malky, doesnt have a lot to do. He jokes with colleagues, lounges in one of the chairs that says "cast".
Shortly before 12:30 he leaves for his lunch break. The others shall go on alone, he grins.
The next scene: Graeme Obree is welcomed by the french mayor - on a german church square that is trimmed with blue, white and red little flags.
In addition a banner saying: ""Bienvenue Graeme Obree! Genie!!"
Graeme Obree is played by Johnny Lee Miller, who also had a leading role in "Trainspotting" ( 1996 ). Laura Fraser ( Vanilla Sky ) plays his wife. Also: Steven Berkoff the James Bond villian ( Octopussy). And always ready in the backround is the real Graeme Obree - noone knows his story better than himself.
The sun is burning. 30 degrees by now.And a few men have to put their berets back on. No question, a hot shoot. An on it goes. The settings are moved in the right place, the cameras are positioned and the extras are instructed.
Big movie in Hattingen: Aaaaand Action!
