I translated the text for my beloved english speaking friends..
„Hi, my name is Dom, thats what all my friends call me”.
I have to look twice, as Dominic Monaghan welcomes me to the set of “lost” on the hawaiian island ‘oahu’!
He played the little hobbit Merry in Lotr and now is the wracked Charlie?
In front of me is a 1,70 m , really cool guy, with teared jeans, grubby shirt and uncombed hair.
Apart from that he has jug ears and lisps (?) – sweet.
The 28 year old has finished shooting for the day and takes me for a walk . “Here on set I’m the clown for everyone”
To provide food for his pets, the chamaleon “karma” and two egypt scorpions , he even crawls in the dirt to catch bugs.
That his colleagues find that weird,doesn’t bother him. “I’m cool with that ..After all I’m European!”
To be accurate Dom is from Germany: Born on the 8th December 1976 in posh Berlin neighbourhood Charlottenburg as a son to two Brits :” My mum and dad worked for the British forces, she as a nurse and he as a teacher. Later we also lived in Münster, Düsseldorf und Stuttgart, before moving to Manchester/England.”
With Germany Dom primarily associates memories of food : Sauerkraut, Currywurst and Maoam-sweets.
“My childhood was great” he contently recalls . Then he becomes thoughful: “Sadly I can’t say that for all of my life..”
Just after his success as Marry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy he fell into a crisis:” It was hell. I felt empty and didn’t know what to do with myself!” Looking for alternation he moved to Los Angeles - a big mistake: “ I didn’t have a car, no telephone and above all – no friends!”
Dom let himself go, began to drink and smoke weed , played on his playstation all day and slept until 4 in the afternoon.
The turning point came, when he was offered the role of Charlie on Lost. “The show saved me. I could no longer just hang around, I had to go to work everyday.
With some of his castmates he now shares a deep friendship-more than that : Rumours are, he’s having an affair with Evangeline Lilly (Kate), 25 .
But Dom just laughs about that :” People think that Evey and I are together because we went to the Golden Globes in january together, but though she's a nice girl, I am single.”
He’s still not totally satisfied with his life : When he’s alone he sometimes has the feeling that demons crawl into his head. Nearly desperately he says: “ I wanna fall in love again, have kids and be a great father - and I’m panicing I might die before I can experience that!”

This is a teen magazine, right? If so, no wonder they make him sound so 'desperate'. I seem to remember teen mags always trying to portray famous guys as cuddly teddy-bears who want nothing more than to fall in love... catering to the romantic daydreams of their readers. (Not that I'm disbelieving that Dom would want those things... just that I have a hard time imagining him 'panicing' over it)
